    Dear Parents,

    The 5-Essentials Survey:

The 5 Essentials Survey is a state wide survey that allows parents, staff, and even students (grades 6-12) to provide schools with feedback concerning the school’s learning conditions and environment.  The 5 Essentials, as determined through the research at the University of Chicago, are components that are critical for school success.  They are Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families, Supportive Environment, and Ambitious Instruction.  The data collected this year will be reported on the Illinois School Report Card next fall.  For more information, please go to https://illinois.5-essentials.org/2016/.

The window is currently open for taking this survey on a computer through Monday, January 16, 2017.  Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ to take the survey online.

    School Improvement

Students at Scott School continue to perform at a high level, but of course there is always room for improvement. Each year every school in our school district submits a School Improvement Plan (SIP) to the Board of Education this time of year. Scott School’s SIP is a detailed four page document. In brief it focuses on three main areas: Standards-Based Grading and Reporting; Technology and Learning; and School Culture. Committees meet throughout the school year and on Institute days to address improvement tasks in these areas.

    Winter Weather

At the elementary level in our school district, students go outside for recess daily when the wind chill is above zero.  This is most days.  Even days that begin cold are usually warm enough later in the day so that we can have children participate in outside recess.  Please help your children make wise choices when dressing for school and remember to bring a coat, hat, gloves or mittens, and warm shoes.  When we have snow, boots and snow pants are required to venture off the blacktop and out into the snow covered field.  Thanks in advance for attending to this so your child is prepared for enjoying the winter weather.

    Late Start (for Inclement Weather)

Naperville School District 203 will continue to run a late start schedule for all schools on severe weather days.  The late start schedule provides the flexibility to begin school two hours later than normal, allowing time for roads to be cleared and temperatures to rise.  This alternative eliminates a situation where severe weather in the early morning leads to a decision to close schools for an entire day when it is not warranted.

On late start schedule days district buses will arrive at the scheduled pick-up points two hours later than their regularly-scheduled time.  Students who walk or drive to school should arrive at (not prior to) the times listed below.  In the event a late start schedule is utilized, class periods will be shortened to accommodate a shorter day but dismissal times will not change.

The Elementary School late start schedule will be drop off of students at 10:00 AM with a 10:15 AM start of school.  Dismissal will remain at 2:30 PM.

All morning activities will be cancelled including the YMCA Safe and Sound and Resource Center programs.  Field trips will also be cancelled.  After school and evening programs will run as usual unless otherwise announced by 2:00 PM that day.  The hot lunch program provided by Aramark will also run that day.  School closures and late starts will be announced by 5:45 AM on District 203’s website – http://www.naperville203.org – and through the District’s Talk203 notification system (encompassing email, SMS and telephone calls). In addition, school closures and late starts are reported to the Emergency Closing Center, which broadcasts the information on the following Chicago stations: WGN-AM (720), WBBM-AM (780), and CBS-TV (2), NBC-TV (5), ABC-TV (7), WGN-TV (9), FOX-TV, and CLTV cable. Families may also call the District Administrative Offices – (630) 420-6300 – to hear a recorded telephone message concerning a school closing or late start. Notices are also provided on the District’s social MEDIA ACCOUNTS, Facebook and Twitter.

On late start days, parents and staff are encouraged to continue to monitor the District’s website for updates on the status of after-school activities. Information will be posted no later than 2:00 PM.

Have a great December and holiday season!

Strategic Blueprint

  • District 203’s FOCUS 2020 Strategic Blueprint

Posted by Superintendent Dan Bridges at 6/27/2014
FOCUS 2020 is the strategic plan for comprehensive improvement between 2014 and 2020, designed in response to community feedback, best practice, and a vision for the future. Ultimately, this blueprint will advance the fulfillment of the district’s mission.
FOCUS 2020’s foundation is the Future Focus Community Engagement process that occurred over the course of a year where hundreds of members from across the community provided feedback to the district leadership regarding areas such as facilities, finances, measuring student success, and programs of study. Learn more about Future Focus by clicking on the specific “Quick Link” to the left of this text.
The Blueprint includes four “Strategic Focus” areas, namely to:
    1. Design and implement effective practices that promote learning experiences for all.
    2. Foster a high-performance culture focused on student learning.
    3. Steward resources effectively to promote student learning.
    4. Effective communication and community relations.
Each Strategic Focus then establishes “Commitments.” These commitments are what the district leadership pledges to accomplish within a distinct timeframe. Each commitment then includes a detailed “Action Plan” which will be accessible by the public upon final draft.
District administrators provided an update on Blueprint Commitments to the Board of Education at the July 27, 2015 meeting.  To watch that presentation, please click here
